Last week I shared how SaaS messaging often doesn’t translate into new industries and why expansion requires translating your language to fit your target market.

This week, I want to show you another common messaging pitfall:

👉 Trying to scale 1:1 ABM the wrong way.

Even the best brands fall into this trap.

Take Canva for example.

They’ve been running 1:1 ABM ads and landing pages to different companies.

But instead of tailoring the message, they simply swap out the company name and call it personalization.

It’s the exact same copy across accounts.

🚫 No industry insight.
🚫 No account-specific relevance.
🚫 Just a logo change.

That’s not 1:1 ABM. That’s copy-paste marketing.

What went wrong?

Canva tried to scale 1:1 ABM too broadly.

1:1 ABM isn’t about hitting as many accounts as possible.

It’s about focusing on the few that matter most, the ones with:

  • The highest immediate business impact

  • The strongest known relationships

  • The clearest fit for your solution

How to fix it

If Canva (or any company) wants to run 1:1 ABM effectively, they need to:

  • Scale back to a smaller set of truly strategic accounts

  • Invest in deep account and industry research

  • Craft messaging that shows an understanding of each account’s pain points and priorities

That’s what separates a campaign that feels generic from one that actually moves a deal forward.

The takeaway

ABM isn’t about “more.”

It’s about precision.

When you treat 1:1 like a volume game, you dilute the value.

When you treat it like a craft, you win the accounts that actually matter.
